Overview

Full day open jeep safari in Yala National Park from dawn to dusk. Morning and afternoon sessions, packed lunch in the park. Maximum time for leopard, elephant and sloth bear sightings.

A full day in Yala gives you everything the park has to offer — the electric stillness of first light, the midday hours when leopards drape themselves across branches, and the golden late afternoon when elephants gather at the lagoons.

You enter Block 1 at dawn and spend the entire day tracking Sri Lanka’s extraordinary wildlife in an open 4x4 jeep with your expert naturalist. Leopards, Asian elephants, sloth bears, mugger crocodiles, water buffalo, golden jackals and over 200 bird species. A packed lunch is served in the park, away from the gate crowds, at a quiet spot your guide has scouted for years.

This is the definitive Yala experience — unhurried, thorough, and far beyond what a half-day can offer.

Itinerary

Day 1

Full Day in Yala — Dawn to Dusk

  • 5:30 AM: Enter Yala Block 1 at first light
  • Morning: Track leopards, elephants and sloth bears through scrub and lagoon trails
  • Midday: Packed lunch at a secluded waterhole inside the park
  • Afternoon: Continue safari — peak birdlife and elephant activity at lagoons
  • 6:00–6:30 PM: Exit park at dusk, return to gate or hotel
05:30 - 07:00

Enter at park opening. First light is prime leopard activity time. Your guide moves slowly and reads the bush carefully.

Track leopards through rocky outcrops and dry riverbeds. Elephant herds gather at the lagoons. Sloth bear sightings most likely mid-morning.

12:00 - 13:00

Story

By 7 AM the jeep has been stationary for twenty minutes at the edge of a dry riverbed.Your guide has seen something. He doesn’t say what. He just watches. Then a leopard emerges from the treeline — a large female, moving unhurried along the bank. She stops, regards the jeep, and continues. She is twelve metres away. You eat lunch at a lagoon three hours later. A herd of elephants wades in on the far bank. A sea eagle circles overhead.By 5 PM the light is turning gold and a sloth bear shuffles across a rocky hillside in the middle distance. Your guide smiles. He has been watching that hillside all day.A full day in Yala. Every hour earns its place.

Special

Dawn to Dusk — The full-day format means you are in the park for both peak activity windows: first light and late afternoon. Half-day visitors miss one or the other.
Packed Lunch in the Park — Your guide takes you to a quiet waterhole or viewpoint for lunch away from the crowded gate area. A genuinely memorable experience.
Leopard Density — Yala Block 1 has one of the highest concentrations of leopards anywhere in Asia. A full day significantly improves your sighting odds.
Sloth Bear Territory — Yala is one of the few places in Sri Lanka where sloth bear sightings are relatively reliable, particularly around rocky outcrops in the dry season.
Birding — Over 200 bird species including painted storks, lesser adjutants, Sri Lanka junglefowl, black-necked storks and sea eagles. Superb at the lagoon edge at dusk.
