Overview

7-day private hill country tour of Sri Lanka. Ella, Nuwara Eliya, tea estates and the scenic Kandy–Ella railway. Boutique plantation accommodation and all transfers included.

Sri Lanka’s hill country is a different world — cool mountain air, rolling tea estates, colonial-era bungalows, misty waterfalls and some of the most scenic train journeys on earth. This 7-day private tour moves through the heart of the highlands at a pace that allows you to actually feel the landscape rather than just photograph it.

You travel on the famous Kandy–Ella scenic railway through the tea country — one of the world’s great train journeys. You hike to the top of Little Adam’s Peak above Ella and walk the Nine Arches Bridge at dawn. You visit a working tea estate and learn how Ceylon tea moves from leaf to cup. You explore Horton Plains National Park and stand at World’s End, looking out over a two-kilometre cliff to the coastal plains below.

Accommodation is in plantation bungalows, hill country boutique hotels and converted colonial properties — each chosen for its setting and character. This is the Sri Lanka that most visitors miss when they stay on the coast.

Story

The train leaves Kandy at 8:47 AM. By the time you’re past Hatton the world outside has changed completely — the lowland heat is gone, replaced by mist and the smell of tea. Your guide points out the women picking on the hillside. He grew up near here. His grandmother picked tea for forty years. At Ella you step off the train into a cool mountain evening and walk to your bungalow through a working estate. The owner brings you tea on the veranda. It was picked this morning, thirty metres away. Next morning you’re at Nine Arches Bridge at 6 AM, alone except for a local farmer and the mist. The first train comes through at 7:15. You’re there when it does.

Special

The Kandy–Ella Scenic Railway — One of the world’s great train journeys. Rolling tea estates, waterfalls and mountain views through the window for four hours. World’s End, Horton Plains — A sheer 2,000-metre cliff dropping to the coastal plains. One of the most dramatic viewpoints in Sri Lanka. Ella Rock & Nine Arches Bridge — Two of Sri Lanka’s most iconic hikes, both within walking distance of Ella town. Tea Estate Experience — Walk the plucking rows, watch the processing and taste fresh-made Ceylon tea at the source. Not a tourist show — a working estate. Plantation Bungalow Stays — Colonial-era estate bungalows and boutique hill country hotels with mountain views and log fires.
